Västervik – an archipelago town on the Baltic
Just about 20 minutes by car from Ankarsrum lies Västervik, a lively coastal town right on the Tjust archipelago with thousands of islands, rocks and small bays. Especially in summer, Västervik offers a wide choice of restaurants, cafés, shops and second-hand stores, along with markets, concerts and numerous events.
One of the best-known summer events is the long-established VisFestivalen, one of Sweden’s oldest annual music festivals. Right by the water you’ll also find Slottsholmen, a complex co-developed by ABBA member Björn Ulvaeus with a hotel, restaurant, spa and marina.
Also worth seeing is the Västervik Museum, which offers insights into the region’s maritime history. Just outside the town centre lies the Gränsö peninsula with Gränsö Castle, a nature reserve, hiking trails, bathing spots and lovely views of the archipelago. Excursion boats also depart from Västervik into the archipelago, so you can discover the islands of the Baltic coast from the water too.
For holidaymakers, Västervik is also the region’s practical shopping hub. Alongside the charming town centre with its small shops, you’ll find supermarkets, DIY stores, electronics shops and many other options. There’s a wide choice of restaurants and cafés – from a quick lunch to dinner right by the water.
The tourist information at Stora Torget is a good place for up-to-date details on events, destinations, archipelago boat services and activities around Västervik. Västervik thus combines Swedish coastal life, archipelago nature, dining, shopping and culture – and is quickly reached from Ankarsrum for a day or evening trip.
